weird noise, then engine dies... 2 miles out!
#1
So myself and my two sons are out in the maine woods on the trapline about 2 miles on my '86 Kawi Bayou 300 2wd w/locking diff coming back up a slight incline when there is this noise i've never heard, then the engine dies immediately. the noise almost sounded like maybe i hit the start button and the starter engaged for a split second before it all went to hell.
either way i fiddled around with what limited tools i had out in the snow. battery was still very much charged (ran winch to get out a few times), neutral light on, could shift, start button when pushed would do nothing. i wiggled the solenoid and such on the back of the battery box, and nothing. Just drained oil, plenty in there, so i'm hoping the motor's not seized.
Any ideas at all? this was a bad spot to be in with two little ones. Buddy of mine came and towed us out. lucky the weather was good, snow was packed and sun was warm.

can you remove the starter, refill the oil ect. and then use the pull start? see if it works? i have not seen a starter just sieze while rideing like that....

actually we got it last night, and it would have been an easy fix in the field had I known what happened.
the headlight wire was shorting back by the battery box. cleaned the connections and will repair that section and we have it running again. thankfully it wasn't anything more.
one bad part too on this machine... no pull start. anyone know of an aftermarket unit that can be put on. would like to have that option in the event of a mishap.
thanks
