Default Looking at getting older Fourtrax...Want opinions

Hey all, I am new here and to the ATV arena. I am looking to get my 1st ATV for Hunting in SW Ga, not planning to do any mudding. I am going to be looking at a 1988 fourtrax 300. Seller says it is garage kept and runs great. Pics show it in great condition. First off, as an older ATV, how hard is it to get parts for it? I have read that most parts are interchangable from 1988 to 2000.

Also, what specifically should I be looking at when I check it out?

first off, welcome to the forum!! parts shouldent be a problem. wwwbikebandit.com will have anything you need for your bike! yes, most parts are with that model. look for oil leaks and listen for motor noise ticking or knocking. check for bent or cracked frame componets. hope this helps!!

The 300 is a venerable old machine, and parts are still readily available.

I would also look for a Rancher 350. It is a generation newer than the old 300, and has many improvements like a transverse mounted engine, it's lighter, and has a torque sensing differential (the old 300 has an open differential, which is a serious flaw!). Should be lots of these out there at good prices.

Either of these machines can benefit from a Warn 424, which turns them into selectable 2wd/4wd.

And....don't make the mistake of just being a "hunter". My buddies who never ride their quads except a few times during hunting season, never develop enough skills to be anything but unskilled novice riders. Get out there and do some trail riding too!
