Need help with restoring a 400 Xplorer
#1
Hello I am trying to revive a 1995 400 Xplorer from the dead. After rebuilding the carb and cleaning out the tank I have it running but it needs some tuning.
First of all which screw on the carb adjusts the idle speed? It is idling low and stalls at idle, but if I give it a little gas then it idles ok. Also there is a slight bog when I open the throttle that I want to fix.
Secondly since the quad sat for who knows how long I dont fully trust the oil injection system. I put premix in the gas tank for the first startup and the machine ran WAY rich, smoking all over the place and fouling plugs. So I pumped the premix out and put straight gas in the gas tank and topped off the oil tank to try and see if the oil pump is working. Its not smoking as bad now, but I am not 100% sure the oil injection is working. Is there any easier way to test the oil pump to make sure it is working so I dont fry the engine? Thanks.

idle screw is the big brass thumb wheel on the right side of the slide housing on the carb.
to check oil there is a banjo fitting just to the left of the intake boot on the side of the cylinder. take that off and put premix back into the gas tank. start the motor. should have a few drops a minute come out of the banjo fitting. the oil injections on these machines are almost fool proof.

Thanks for the reply.
I got the machine running ok, I had to turn the idle screw all the way in and it still idles too low. Is the smaller screw on the carb a low speed adjustment, and then the high speed jet is the fixed one inside the carb? Should this smaller screw be about one turn out from all the way in? I still have lackluster midrange throttle response, and WOT is fine.
Thanks

Check out ebay (sledpartsguy). He had kits that include the chain and both front and rear sprockets. I forgot what I paid, but it was less than $100 for all three items.

Yeah I found all three on ebay for 89 bucks, I should have them in a couple days. Do I have to remove the small sprocket to install the chain, or do you just link up the chain on the machine?
Also how do you tension the chain? I havent found a decent manual yet. Thanks

should be able to looses the carrier bearing pinch strap bolts and roll the carrier backwards. that will loosen the chain. install chain and tighten the carrier. torque pinch strap bolts to 45 ft lbs i believe.
