2002 polaris sportsman 500 electrical problems, help please
#1
hi everyone im new here, anyhow i have a 2002 polaris sportsman 500 4x4, i recently bought it cheap cause it wont start. i have replaced the stator w/pulser and im still getting nothing. the rectifier is reading 12.6v in red/black and red on yellow/red and yellow it is reading 11.4 is this corect? thats when they are unhooked. know there were rats that had a nest by the cdi. but no wire are damaged. could it be rectifier, cdi ? and on the cdi the white/blue stripe i tested it to ground while engine cranking and nothing, isn't that what sends the spark to the coil? i also tested the wires coming from stator both yellows and black and red i get nothing, but i cut the 2 yellow wires to test them before the stator and they had close to 12v when i hooked them back together how they go i have nothing across them, its like a dead short, its a brand new stator. can some one please point me in the right direction so i dont spend a fortune trying to fix this beast. thanx

to late i bought one (a stator with pulser) put it on still nothing.how can i tell if the rectifier/regulator is bad wouldn't that have something to do with spark? and on my cdi box i tested the black wire to ground and it had 9v when cranking engine but the white/blue stripe wire has nothing when cranking. man im stuck. with a new stator and pulser when that does not appear to be the problem. does any body have any idea. and does anyone know were i can get a wiring diagram/schematic?

It amazes me that you guys can afford to buy parts just to see if they are the problem. I suggest that you get a haynes or clymer shop manual. They will have an electrical schematic and will also offer some things to check to determine the problem.

Start off first by checking the kill switch........
Did say a nest was there at one time.........Clean airbox and venting ..A assume you check this..
And ETC electronic throttle control.........This will prevent the Quad from starting if there too much slack..

jchunn i was told by a local so called atv mechanic that it was the stator is why i bought one and replaced old. i listened to him and i guess he did not know for sure it looks to me he was guessing also, but i have no idea how to trouble shoot this one.

where the heck is the etc located caperinmuskoka ? i appreciate all the tips i can get. another reason that mechanic said it was my stator is because the recoil got bound up and broke inside sending chunks of metal flying all around stator and pulser, when we opened it up the stator had chuncks of metal stuck to it i believe causing it to short out. could that have fried something else?

etc is in the throttle housing on the handlebars.
if you replaced the stater, and that still did not fix the problem what about the sensor on the outside of the flywheel. did you check the gap on it? (dont know the specs for it). sometimes that gets out of whack and the motor will not start with the starter but a good tug on the rope will fire it off every time.
you cant really check the rectifier till the bike is running at about 2500 - 3000 RPMs. hardly anything is comeing out of the stator till then.

yah the pulser or pulse censor or stricker some people cal it diferent names, but that came with factory holes in it but were not tight around the mounting screw therefore having some play before you tighten it, i dont know the gap for it either. that could be my prob. those any body know the gap spacing between fly wheel and pulser? i will check the etc in the meanwhile, thank you for your help guys.

Here is a link to 03 700 shop manual PDF but should be very similar for what you need. It is about 250 megs though.
