Well do you want to shift? do you want a bike that weights 523 lbs? compared to 374 lbs on the 400EX!!!
but the 500 does have reverse. let us know what ya get.

It's apples and oranges. The 400EX is a true sport quad with clutched multi speed manual trans. It also has long travel suspension and relatively light weight.I have a 2001 500 2X4,its heavy and a little tippy in corners. It also has reverse and automatic, two things I value above the attributes of the 400EX.BTW,if you think the 2X4 is heavy ,wait till you ride the 4X4(50# heavier).Decide what is important to you. There is no perfect(tops in all performance catagories)quad. There are a lot of good "compromises".

The 500 4x4 sounds like the one to get.I can get one for $5700 out the door,NH doesn't have any taxes yet!! But he has a leftover 500 4x4 for $5000. Is it worth the extra $700 to get the 2001 model or get the 2000 one. Was there any big improvements on the 2001.

If I was to get a Scrambler I WOULD NOT get the 2x4. The negatives of the Scrambler far outweight those of the EX (no reverse or 4x4). True, the EX may get stuck in mud but you can lift it right out; same with the reverse...lift it and turn around if you have to. With the Scrambler you better have a Dodge V-10 handy . Other Scrambler dislikes: Single lever brakes, floor boards, stock tires suck etc. Since I have never ridden one I can't comment on power or suspension. But I have seen them in the dunes and can't climb for ****. On paper the 4x4 seems like one of the best all around quads you can get.....BUT...I'd take the EX if you ever want to mod it, go to the dunes, like to shift etc. RIDE BOTH BEFORE YOU BUY AND DECIDE THEN.

I would have to agree with what someone said earlier. If you want a full-on sports quad get the 400ex. If you want a great sports/trail 4x4 quad, get the Scrambler. I too think the 4x4 is a must with the Scrambler line-up. If it were not for the 4x4, ground clearence, auto-tranny, reverse, electric start, power and smoth ride... I would be on a raptor.

That's just my opinion though. Good luck!

Save yourself the money and get the 2000 model! There were really no appreciable differences between the two years.

How much can i lighten it up if I put on aluminum wheels, bumper, floor boards. The Scrambler X says it should take off 50lbs.Is this true.Polaris brochure only shows the 400 2x4 with all aluminum and that weighs about 50lbs less then the 500.If this is true then I can get the 4x4 to weigh the same as the 2x4. That I could be happy with.
