BUYING A SPORTSMAN XP 550..FEW QUESTIONS???
#1
I am picking up a 550 xp Saturday and was just wondering....Looking at the micro-fisch it looks like this atv uses a different oil filter and air filter than any of the older Sportsman's.

Not sure about the older sportsmans but the 550 and the 850 have filters like a car. I went to the auto parts store and bought a cup type oil filter wrench . Cant remember the size but it was an odd size. was pretty easy to do .. the only issue I could see happening is mud build up around the filter making it hard to change cleanly, but at the first change I hadn't gone through too much mud so it went pretty smooth. We will see what its like next time around.

The 850 filter is the same diameter as the 800 filter just shorter..which is alco the same diameter as the Nissan Titan filter(800 is exactly the same SIZE as the Titan filter)

Has anyone cross referenced the oil filters for the 550-850????</end quote></div>
I have not looked into it yet,I have a few polaris filters still. Again the 550 and 850 are not the same filter just to be clear.
Edit-For even more clarity the XPs both use a different oil filter than the older Sportsman Twins and the 550 and 850 do not use the same oil filter...clear as mud?

HO is right. The oil filter is different on the XP. Not only is it shorter, but the shape inside is different where the drain back holes are. One guy said his stock filter said Subaru on it, but mine was a Polaris filter.
I also noticed that the XP oil change kit comes with the PS4? (I think) oil. The twin cylinder kit came with different oil that is green.
I have not seen any cross references yet. IMO, it's just simpler to use the kit that is specifically made for the machine. Some may opt for a Napa Gold filter and Amsoil, I don't see anything wrong with that either.
