Default 1998 sportsman 500 bought yesterday help

I picked up this 4wheeler yesterday for $200 for wife I knew it had problems when I bought it. so I hope you guys can send me in the right direction. the guy that owned it before me had it snorkeled but still managed to sink it and got water in the motor. anyway the thing fires right up and idles and revs fine but it smokes alot and it is a white/blue smoke. pulled the plug and it was dark black and oil coated. it also ticks and knocks pretty bad too. I took off the vavle cover today and the exhuast rocker had almost a 1/4" of clearance between it and the valve. also changed the oil to 10w-40 and that helped some. where is a good place to order gaskets and parts from for these quads?

Ditto! Put in the POLARIS OIL!!
I would change all of the other fluids too, just so i would know that they were all good. Also grease all fittings, check belt, change all filters and make sure it has good gas in it. New plug and then worry about gaskets and such! JMO!

Sounds like a good buy!

if i had to guess i would say the top end needs a rebuild for sure. most all the sportsmans take 0-40 synth. oil. did you do a compression test? if its smoking as you say, sounds like the rings are bad for sure from maybe the water in the engine and if it did get into the engine and was ran that way then the crank bearing took hell as well i would guess. imo.

yea im going to pull the head off tomorrow check out the piston and the head. I adjusted the valves today and they were all fine so im thinking maybe the piston is rattling around in there are maybe the rod or crank bearings have had it. I read the post and changed the oil to 0w-40 mobil1, thanks for the info. has anyone on here done a bottom end on a 500? im trying to do it for cheap. i dont want to put more than $500 into it to get it running good.

so i pulled the head off and the wristpin was siezed to the rod end. and piston skirt was destroyed on one due to the pin not allowing the piston to swing as the crank rotated. so i work on cars alot so i assume the oil come for the rod bearing up through the rod and there should be a hole in the rod end where the wrist pin is but since the pin siezed the hole is covered? so I think I can hone the cylinder walls or get it bored with a new piston and wrist pin and fix the rod end without having to split the case.

Have the cylinder measured to see how much oversize you need , Wiseco makes piston and ring kit with wrist pin, have it bored to the piston by a good machine shop. Want to make it run better? Put an HO cam , a 40 mm carb and an 11 to 1 wiseco piston in it, I also had the head ported a little and it will run.
