Default 400ex ticking

recently got a 03 400ex it runs great but when you start it cold it makes a odd knocking/ticking sound but it does not speed up with rpms. then once its warm it completly goes away. anyone ever had this problem. or have a idea what it could be. dont know any history on bike. not sure when or if valves ever been adjusted, plugs etc. has a k&n with drilled lid, not sure if its jetted, the screws on carb looked tampered with. and the previous owner removed a slip on pipe.

only at idle. it doesnt speed up with rpm's. and once its warm it goes away completely, until it cools back down
can i just remove the main jet to see what size it is. im curious if its been jetted and dont wanna remove carb just to find out. will it have a number etched in it?

You need to check your valve adjustment. If it is not the valves, it is probably the timing chain.

Sounds like the valves to me. I would start there then move on to the timing chain.

07 400ex mine does it when its really cold.sounds like a spark knock. if it idles just a tad bit higher it doesnt do it.how cold is it outside when it does it.i think on mine it is a combonation of kinda stale gas in the carb and cold weather.and my valves were just checked.no more than 50 hours on quad.if this sounds like it might be same problem i wouldnt worry bout it much. ps try turning your gas off and running the carb empty next time you park it.remember to pump your throttle a few times when you go to start it again.

its been about 40 here. 20 at night. yea it runs awesum and the noise disappears once its warmed up.
also i believe its been jetted but arent for sure.carbs screws looked like theyve been tampered with before. has a k&n and had a slip on at one time. i have a lexx slip on, on the way. can i just remove the nut on the bottom of card and access main jet? and will it have a size number etched in it?

But if the noise doesn't get faster as RPM's increase, how can it be the valves, timing chain, cam, or anything else related to RPM's????? I think it's something else.
