Help: Need advise on Banshee carbs
#1
My neighbor is having a problem with his Banshee, and we need some of your expert advise.
The bike is all stock except for several vents added to the air box. Last summer he added a twist throttle grip to it. At that time the carb slides seemed to bottom out at the same time , after a little adjusting. It does not idle for beans,.. and I think I heard there needs to be an idle kit used when you change to a twist grip. But he just learned to deal with a no idle condition.
But here is the recent problem:
The last two weekends we have been riding in the Michigan weather of about 25 to 30 degrees out, and he keeps fouling the left plug. This did not happen last summer. Also, one time he parked the bike, and the fuel dumped out on the driveway from one (?) of the carbs. Now I am getting close,.. a stuck float(?). Well we changed the plug, but the left pipe is always spitting more smoke than the right. Today he took the airbox off and found the right carb slide is not bottoming out like the left,... OK so I think the cables streched,.. and need adjusting. And, the right plug is also very wet and black ( rich) looking. I was expecting the left slide to be out of adjustment, and cause the rich & foul condition.. but it is at bottom with throttle released.
Oh yea,.. one more fact. When he put the twist grip on, he made no note of which groove he used on the needle clip. So they could either be different or wrong.
We took the left carb off and took it apart and cleaned it,.. but there was no obvious problems with the float or needle jet under it ( to the naked eye that is)
Your advise is appriciated....
( cause I need a buddy to ride with me on my new Raptor)

Can you tell if the right side is even firing? I definetly would not ride it until you get the carbs in synch.. very hard on the engine, by the sounds of it my banshee was doing the same thing and I blew it up big time... when in the powerband the right side would fire, when not in the powerband it wouldnt and wanted to die.. it also would not idle.. Here is a picture of it http://www.geocities.com/yamahabanshee96/right.jpg it also was the right cylinder that wasnt firing on my shee... Anyways Id say bring it to a dealer and have them adjust it, then if it blows up you can put the blame on them..

My #1 advice is not to work on only one carb. Clean them BOTH, change BOTH plugs, check BOTH compressions...etc. To do your slide adjustment, take the airbox out, and listen (yes listen) when the slides move. Throttle released, both slides are at their lowest, then move up the throttle (there should be a little slack), both slides should start moving in the same time. If not, then adjust it. Then check if they get up to the max. Check for any air leak, clean your jets (BOTH sides).
Mine did the same thing when I first got it (seemed to smoke only one side, bad power...). It was simply a dead plug.

Here's what I did. Take those carbs off and put them in a box up on your shelf. Then contact Graydon Proline or Trinity and get your self one of there single carb systems. I went with the GP because I got a killer deal on it, but, I think the Trinity looks way better. I have a couple of friends running the Trinity kits and they all feel the same way about it as I do. Best thing you can do. Both cylinders always run the same, and jetting is 100 times easier. I've got Pro circuit pipes on mine with a single uni pod filter and it flat out walks away from my friends shee with T-5's and the stock dual mukuni carbs. Take this for what it's worth, just my opinion.

My 96 banshee was basicaly doing the same thing except it was stock. It appears a friend that I lent it to thought he was a mechanic and took it upon himself to adjust the settings. It would fire on one cylinder and run like it was half throttle then the other wuold fire and ignite the excess fuel and run way too high.My advice take it to a qualified mechanic. It will be alot cheaper in the long run.
