Default Pullin a 6 foot chain link flex harrow

I need something to break up my horse puckies in the field, so I'm torn between a 4' or 6' wide, 5" large chain link with Points (tines), flexiable harrow. Both are sets of chains are approx. 48 in length, The chain links are like 5" squares, and about 1/2" diameter steel. Each link will have a Point, however one can flip it over and only drag the non-tined side for less drag (and effect)

I also already own a tractor, but wonder if one or either could be pulled with a 420 Rancher as I dont really know what they weight, or what kind of drag coeifficent the harrows will have with the drag points pointing down. The Rancher tends to have a higher gear ratio than the Foremans, but not by much. The harrows drag angle backwords which will help to reduce the drag wieght some.

Theres about $130 difference between the two, and I'm sure the 6' wide weights about 100 lbs and 4' chain might weight 70 lbs, and they both hook over a ball on your ATV or Tractor. I have less that 10 acres I need to only drag parts of as they drop puckies only their choice areas.


Anyone have any experience with ATVs and Harrows?

i've got a 420 4wd rancher and have pulled a an old harrow that is only 1 section wide maybe 5 foot and i had the teeth vertical and it pulled fairly easily i think i know what ur talking about and i'm sure they would pull fine.

Although the Rancher is lighter than the Foreman and the Rubicon and seems more tuned for snappy top end than torque, my guess is that it would pull a chain link harrow ok. As long as it doesn't slip the clutch or overheat, I don't think it would hurt it.

If it doesn't seem to like it, and you have a tractor right there...

Gerken,

What is 1 section? Maybe I dont know what a common harrow looks like.

I'm thinking if I have any difficulty, it would be with the auto clutch. Perhaps once I get it moving, I should keep it in first, not stop any more than necessary, and keep the rpms up near 1500-2000

when i refered to 1 section i'm talking about an old harrow or drag that used to be used in the fields after disking. a lot of them were on wheels and they had 3, 5 or however many of these 5 foot sections that all acted individualy. The one i use looks something similar to this one, http://www.mrobonline.com/harrow.JPG i just took two pieces of chain and formed a y shape with a loop on the end of the y to go in my clevis and the tips of the y bolt to the outside corners of the harrow. Mine also has a handle so i can adjust the teeth straight up and down or if i just want to make it pull easier and not go as deep i can lean them back. I've heard of these working good on beaches to keep the sand looking nice also.

I decided to buy the 6' flex harrow, brought the truck to town to pick it up at lunch time today [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img] I'm pretty sure if I dont weight it down, I can pull without overworking the drive train.

Good to hear your getting the harrow. I've pulled 2 6' end to end with out a problem in low range with my rubi.

EDIT*** Your not still talking the chain link flex harrow are you? Get the old style adjustable harrow you will be happier in the long run. The old style has alot more capability and you can find them cheap at farm sales. You can buy 5 section for $150 take it apart scrap the frame and sell the 4 sections you don't need for $100 each. Good way tom make extra cash on a deal for a minimal amount of work.

Same with my business, repeat customers are 85% of the revenue stream from year to year. Of coarse after year one, new cutomers become repeats in year two. I think cell phone companies may be on the edge of figuring this out too. They don't offer those new customer promos like they use too. Why reward a new customer that has no history with you when you could reward the long standing customer? If one of my customers refers someone to me, I give them a gift certificate for a meal out. I get a good deal on those cause the resturaunt is my customer and I am theirs. It all works out good. I don't spend money on advertising, my equipment and reputation is my advertising. If these companies could save the money on ads and put it into warranty and making the machines better. This would be most benefical to all of us, unless we were in the marketing business.

I was wondering where this reply went to. My two year olde pounded the keyboard and there is was.....GONE. This was supposed to be in the polaris thread.

Yes I bought the 6' flex harrow today. I'll try it out this week or weekend. I dont see an option to add a photo, see you'll have to use your imagination

Results: Well I changed the breakin fluid at 18 hours in the new Rancher, and worked the harrow with my o8 4x4 Rancher, and worked fine in first gear (in 2 wheel drive), But Second gear I felt was just too fast, and too hard on the drive train. I had some steep up-hills, with fairly thick growth, and I wouldn't stop on these until I was ontop, so not to over buren the engine & clutch.

A problem I had, while in first gear, the back corners of the flex harrow flipping up and laying upside down thereby reducing the amount of total drag. So I rounded up another large, 12' chain, and linked it on the rear, and allowed the extra chain length to drag (about 2.5 feet on each side) from each rear corner and I never had the back corners of the harrow flop over again.

I also tried the flex harrow with my o6 2x4 350 Rancher. It also worked alright, but when trying to cross a creek, I got stuck on the upside bank and had to manually lift the harrow out. This would had been the only time I would require the use of 4 wheel drive. I didn't notice any temp increase, or power fade on the 420

However, I wouldn't recommend using one in dry conditions as your atv would be sucking in large amounts of dust into the intake. My ground was slightly damp durning my drags.
