Anyone Tried To Shave Some Weight Off Their 400EX?

I have put mine on a limited diet as of now. No headlights @ 5-7 lbs, maier race plastic, about 3lbs , case saver, aftermarket exhaust, protapers, tamers 20x10x8, no foot gaurds, graydon nerfs, and prodesign shifter. You can cut as much of the plasic under the seat out as possible to lighten the back seat assembly. you can also take out those wire supports if you chose. the biggest lose is the headlights and stock plasic, and exhaust. from their a lighter subframe.

Sure, take off the electric starter, battery and associated wiring, that should take about 20 lbs. off... Wait a minute, the 400ex doesn't have a pull starter or kick starter !!! Hmmm... How about removing the reverse gear... Darn !!! Doesn't have one of them either....
Honda built a quad that if the battery dies, you have to push start it, and it can't back up under it's own power?
What if it dies at the bottom of a ravine? I hope you have AAA...

hmm nice a polaris, hope you ride with others, if it breaks down anywhere hope u in good enough shape to walk home... no i think the easiest way to shed any weight is to get an aftermarket muffler, any other ways i dont really know since i'm not really into racing

dont be ignorent! if the 400ex dies, you can start it by putting it in gear, pulling in the clutch, rolling it forward, and poping out the clutch. this is much easier than pull starting, i have done both. so, if you want to, take off the electric starter and battery and pop start it. oh, yeah, i am young and can pick up the back end of a light quad, i might have to get reverse again when i get old.

Personally, I love it when there is a little bashing going on. However, they should have attacked the weak subframe on the 400ex, oh yeah, no one jumps a Polaris, so it wouldn't apply. If it had reverse, it would be hands down the best quad ever. To lose weight, I think that the first guy was a little bit on the exaggeration side of weight removal. I would think that the headlights are closer to 3 lbs. Weight savings unfortunately costs money. There are a few things that you can take off that will lose some weight. There are a few items up front in the wheels that are optional, the air intake (white) is optional (if you don't ride water). The tool canister and tools are optional. The rear light is optional. You can drill holes in things like shift lever, brake lever. If you are talented, you can make things out of aluminum like the battery holder, sprocket guard, and header plate (that protects leg) You can remove the parking brake, remove the foot guards. That is about it for cheap or free.
For $$$, +2 a arms weigh about 1 lb less, shocks weigh about 1-2 lbs less each. New wheels and tires are usually HEAVIER, unless you run the 18/19" motocross combo. Exhaust silencer/header can save 2-15 lbs. rear axle about 1-2 lbs, new clutch perch/handle a few grams, cut plastic or maier race about 1 lb. new handlebars about 1 lb. new subframe about 1 lb. That is all I can think of right now. I believe mine is down to about 360 now and I still have the stock pipe.
Hope it helps.

Ride, you may want to re-read the last three sentances of the post on the 12th. I covered your points.
As for getting old, "Old age and experience are far superior to youth and enthusiasm"
In the Commercial Diving Industry we have a saying: "Work SMART, not hard"
I'm 35, and can carry the front or rear of the Scrambler anywhere I want to take it, but I'm smart enough to use the reverse gear in the quad...
