Default Unbiased opinions on all years 660r.

I have an 03' 400ex right now and I want something a little faster, and yes, PRICE IS A MAJOR FACTOR. I can get a 01-04 660r for around $2000, so I need to know if I shold go for it. I trail ride, but I like to open her up every now and then. I've heard their a little tippy, but can be fixed by widening it. What do you guys think, or do you have any other suggestions on ATV's that I could get for a reasonable price?

Thanks.

stay away from the 01s just to be safe and you should be fine some of the 01s had tranny probs, there cool bikes yea they are tippy but im sure it wont take long to get used to and just widen it if you like, 660 would prolly be your best bet for something cheap that is faster than a 400ex, a banshee might also fall into your price range

Yea, but I've heard the Banshees are high-maintenance.

My 02 660 has been high maintenance. The big items: tranny, throw out bearing, new rear subframe, weld repair main frame, rebuilt entire rear bearing carrier components seized. When it is running good, I love the quad but know a repair is right around the corner. I have two 400ex's for my kids, they have never needed a repair.

yea they pretty much are or at least its best to be high maintenance with them in order for them to run good and last, they can still last a long time though and are pretty cheap to rebuild, i think youll be happy with a raptor just as long as its not the 01s just to be on the safe side

660'S Are great machines esp as a play/trail quad. Yes the 660s can be considered a little tippy but that is really only going to be noticed if you plan on racing the quad in MX style racing! There are ton's of remedies to fix and like issues such as wider Arm's.

The only thing to watch out for on the 660's is to stay away from the 01's as they had tranny issues.

If you do buy a 660 the first thing I would do is get rid of dual carb setup and put on a single such as the one put out by Edelbrock!

I love my raptor.I have an 01 and I have not had any tranny problems. It is an awesome trail quad.I have ridden many diff. machines and so far it has been the best quad I have owned.I also have not had any problems with the motor.I had to replace the one-way and just the usual things like chain and sprockets and bearings etc. That is part of reg. maint. If you do see an 01 for sale most likely the tranny problem has already been taken care of.Try one I know you will like it.

Ive owned my banshee since new in late 2003. Ive went through a set of tires, they were completely bald (see my pictures). I rode almost everyday for the first year and every weekend after that. I run amsoil 2 stroke oil for mix and amsoil motor oil in the tranny.

The only thing I have to do on a regular basis is clean the carb and lube the chain and suspension.

Im just now starting to lose compression after riding the shee for 6 years. Itll take me a couple hours to rebuild and ill be as good as new.

The ONLY downside to a banshee is the poor suspension (which is pretty much all quads stock) and you have to mix the gas. It isnt a big deal for me and isnt expensive. I run 50/1 mix ratio amsoil interceptor.

A banshee is only a reliable as you build it. When you try to squeeze 120-130hp out of a 350cc 2stroke engine it will have to be rebuilt more often. If you just throw some pipes on it with an air filter and rejet then you can ride for years before worrying about a rebuild.

The best thing you can do is ignore all the bs you hear and ride the quads you are interested in owning then make a decision for yourself.
