Whenever a low displacement engine puts out high horsepower, you can bet that it it has to wind up to a very high RPM in order to produce it. Not only that, but the engine will only perform well with a light load. When loaded down, the engine will choke. Your Rancher, having much more cc's, does not need to rev up to an insane RPM to produce its power, and that power is very usable even with a heavy load.Besides that, an engine that has a lower piston speed is less stressed and will have a longer service life before needing a rebuild.
