Default New to me 500 ho. Oil change info

I just picked up a used 2005 500ho. I was going to change the oil and filter and noticed it has a seprate oil tank on it. The guy I got it from did not have the owners manual. Is there any special way to change the oil on one of these. A guy at work said there was a way you had to go about changing a dry sump system. Also what kind of oil do you guys run.

Thanks
Duane

Shouldnt be too tough. Just empty the oil reservoir and then drain the oil in the engine block located under the machine on the right side. Its a pain to get to. After that its just about adding oil. I use Mobil 1 0w-40 and a napa gold oil filter on my 07 500. Runs great. Good luck.

My father has a 2005 500 HO sportsman, which I helped him change the oil last week. His wife got him the "oil change kit" from a polaris dealer as an Xmas gift. I had read on here in passing about draining the engine oil (as well as the remote res.) and the need for priming the pump. Long story short, the directions that came with the kit mentioned nothing about draining the engine oil, so we didn't do it. What are the consequences of not draining the engine oil while adding 2 qt. to the oil tank??????

you will end up with 1/2 quarts too much in the oil system. As the Res holds a qt and a half and the ehgine block 1/2 qt..............................

I just drain oil tank leave drain plug out then run motor for 20 seconds and the additional cup of oil in the motors crank case will pump out the oil tank drain as well.

do you have to run the engine or just pull it over with the recoil?? Running an engine with no oil just don't seem good to me..JMO

Running the engine for 20-30 seconds at idle rpm will not hurt anything, there still is alot of oil residue in the engine. Pulling would also do it but it would take longer.
