Default 1998 polaris scrambler 400 4x4 no revirce help?

My 1998 Polaris scrambler 400 4x4 has shafts driving the front wheels not chains. Hear is my problem the bike has no problem going forwards. Not when you put it in to reverse it makes a grinding noise and will not go un less there is little to no loaded holding it back. Now it is not an adjust mint thing. The Trans goes in to gear. Now I have taken the clutch cover off and the belt and if I turn the secondary clutch when its in reverse it skips in side the trans. this problem just started last time I took it out. I have never put much load on it in reverse its just bean used to back off the trailer and stuff. Now I don know why this has happened maybe someone can help me out will this bike keep driving in forwards or am I to expect a problem soon with that to. I would like to sell it and cut my loses. Let me know what you think is wrong with it. Thanks

sounds like the gears have moved on the shift shaft inside the gear box...theres not much in those gearboxes (alteast i dont think so) so it should be easy to pull it out and tear into it.

THe chain in the tranny along with a bearing is bad.Not a big deal to repair just a pain to take the tranny out

eggenz7 has the answer for you, and not a big deal to pull the tranny out on those Scrammy's. I'm guessing though that you might have a stripped shift shaft, as the gear has splines to mate with the shaft

this happened to mine a few years ago. its the reverse "silent" chain inside the tranny. its a $30 part. but its more time consuming to remove the tranny from the machine, than its is to actaully split the cases and replace that chain. but its gotta be done. so get yourself a service manual and get to it! all the instructions are there.
