Default 250X & 300EX vs. 400EX

As many of you know, I have a very nice 87 250X (see my garage) which is almost identical to any 300EX. Well, I have a chance to buy a 2006 400EX at a pretty good price. It's not that I need or even want a new quad. I mostly ride woods trails and although I'm not a putter, I'm not a racer either. I take it slow to medium and enjoy the scenery. The other thing is, most 400EX's are ridden hard and raced and beat. This one is not beat but it isn't pristine either. It will need a few miner things like bearings, valve adj., brakes. I was thinking that it may, at some point, become hard to get parts for my 250X, although almost everything from the 300EX will fit except some engine parts. Another thing going through my mind is how hard it may be to sell my 250X. Especially in this bad economy. Anyway, what do you guys think of a 400EX for my situation?

I love my 400, but unless you have a buyer for your 250, perhaps you should pass on this deal. Like you said, you don't really need it... and later on when you decide you do need it, 400's will still be very easy to come across.

Probably high time you made a step up! The 400 is the primo trail quad of all time, and should be perfect for your conditions. It has a better ride than your old 250 does.

Bought mine in 99, and it still runs as good as the day it was new!!!

if its an 06 it has reverse, makeing it a great choice for a speedy trail quad. i would step up if i had the chance. the only thing that stopped me from getting a 400 was i couldnt find a newer one with reverse in my price range. so i got a 300 instead.

So, 2006 and newer have reverse, but 2005 and older don''t have reverse?

As I recall, reverse began in 05.

The 400 is a great machine and for the most part bulletproof, when you don't need a bike is when the best opportunities arise.

I've had a 400ex, 250R, Warrior, 450R , Banshee and I was thinking that the 400 was one of the best (if not the best) quads I've ever had, it does everything well but it's not the best at any one thing, yesterday I got a great deal on a 400ex and a 450R so it will be the second time around for both quads

Go with the 400 I doubt you will regret it.

i just got my 07 400ex for 4700 brand new, only put 6 hours on it and love it. so smooth and real fast. and yes, some of them are ridden hard, but like some of the other guys said, thats what its made for and it would take alot to really hurt it. and valve adjustments and things like that seem like things that i would do to it anyways if i bought it used. i have a recon also, which is very close to the 250ex. the recon is alot of fun, but man the 400ex blows it away and is way funner. id go ahead and get it if its a good enough deal.

the 300 is a good slow trail quad that you can still have some fun on. it wont hurt your pockets either
