09 YFZ450 or 09 YFZ450R for dunes?

Sold my modded Banshee and my 400EX is on selling block. Contenders for new quad are new 09 YFZ450 and 09 YFZ450R. I like the idea of EFI, wider track, more travel, better seat on 450R. The 1.7" longer wheelbase of YFZ450 would help on hills. The extended swing arm made big difference with the old Shee. No interest in out of date Honda TRX450r. The YFZ450R will cost more but seems to be a much better machine looking at specs. My duning is mainly cruising around and sight seeing but I want more hit than the 400EX plus I am ready for something new. Thanks for opinions.

if you have the money for the 450r get it you will not be upset at all i rode in the sand dunes all last weekend and the suspension is amazing i know for a fact that my 09 is faster than my 06 and i would never considering getting the old style over the newer race styled 450 if you can afford it it is worth the money definetly

tfunk; That is what I needed to hear from someone who has many hours on both styles YFZ. With cash from Banshee plus what I hope to get for 400EX I am still quite a lot short for new YFZ450R. But don't think I would be satisfied with anything else. Thanks for answering.

Don't get a 450r i totally agree with you when u say they are out of date. The yfz has much better overall feel.suspension, power, style its all better. But if i were you i would get the new suzuki ltr450 its fkin beast for duning.

i disagree i rode a ltr that i met out in the dunes a couple of weekends ago and i noticed that mine was softer and also had a more of an edge on the top end. it is a great quad no doubt but i will still say i give the edge to the yamaha and im not saying that just because i own one

well in my opinion both the yfz's have stiff seats and stiff suspension. I would recomend the rappy 700. Good low end torque for crusin, nice crusin suspension, and more than enough go to get you up any hill.

Another vote for a raptor 700 for duning. It probably won't feel as fast as the 450, but line them up and it will shock you. The power delivery of the 700 is extremely smooth and they make tons of torque down low. The suspension on the 09 base model raptor is the same as what used to come on the special edition Raptors, so it's a great setup. It is also a larger quad all around, so it is very comfortable for cruising around. And you can get them for a lot cheaper than what the yfz450r will cost you.
I was in the same place last year...wanted a comfortable quad for mostly cruising the dunes, but still wanted something fast that I could air out every once in a while. After testing everything out there, I came home with a 700 gytr edition, and couldn't be happier. If you want something for racing, then the 450's are where it's at. If you want a very fast, comfortable trail/dune machine...the Raptor can't be beat.
