Centrifugal clutch problem, I think...
#1
out of nowhere, my daughter's '90 bayou 220 developed an issue with the transmission. i believe it's the centrifugal clutch. it'll try to pull itself forward when you put it in gear, and stall. if you give it about 20% throttle before shifting, it won't stall, but once you stop, it dies unless you go into neutral before stopping. the idle is set correctly. i removed the side cover and took the centrifugal clutch out - everything seems fine (springs, shoes & drum). the one way allows the drum to spin freely counter-clockwise and engages the other gears in the other direction (which is how the shop manual states it should work). when cleaning out the cover i found a small piece of metal (pic below), thought maybe it had been lodged inside the centrifugal clutch and was causing the problem. put everything back together and the problem continues. any ideas?

Well, the pictures are blurry, so it is hard to see what that is, but let's see if we can figure it out.
When you said you pulled the clutch, how far did you go? I had a similar problem (have actually - the part is on order) on my dad's quad. Turned out that the clutch shoe return spring had pulled out of the base. Take a look at each of the clutch shoes. Can you pull any one of them outward from the center easier than the others? You might not be able to tell visually that there is a problem if the spring stays in place.
I'm not at all familiar with the Bayou, so this is just in general. If you can get pictures of the clutch setup, that might help some of us help you troubleshoot.
Does the creeping happen in all gears or just one?
Good luck.

yeah, i removed the primary drive gear, which has the clutch drum attached. pulled the 3 shoes and springs out, they all have a good amount of tension and the shoes/drum aren't worn much. put them back together and they aren't rubbing the drum, but when i start it up and put it in gear, it wants to pull forward. i will put a tach on it just to be sure the idle isn't too high, but i'm pretty sure it's not. here's a link to the parts diagram from kawasaki:
