Default scrambler front shocks

My 96 400 makes a awful bang in the front end when you hit a rock or bump, I have replaced the steering bushing with one from HPE and one tierod, the hubs needed oil but seem fine now. after a close inspection there dosent seem to be anything loose. could the shocks be bad. How can you check them? If i stand on the front bumper and bounce the shocks I dont hear anything but if you hit a bump just right you sure hear something. maybe the are bad in one direction??/

Best way is to remover spring and see if strut has any rebound, or does it just fade into the chamber.

I removed the front right shock to inspect and found it to be bad. if you pull out the stem slowly there is no resistanse and it goes into the shock with no effort. the only time it allpies any dapenening is if you push the shock down quickly then pull it out quickly .

I also noticed the top of the shock had been hiltting the bottom side of the fender.

thanks for the help.
