Default 400 HO or 500?

Looking for a mid size ride for the wife and kids..They like the full auto trans and price is a concern so we were looking at Polaris as they have some good deals right now on 09s...I have no experience with them at all so some feedback would be greatly appreciated..We were looking at the 400 HO model which is a mid sized atv and the full sized 500 sportsman(carbureted).....Smooth ride would also be a big plus as I have back problems..

The 400(455cc) H.O has IRS and nice mid size frame and is cheaper. Sounds like the one for you.

Dont forget the 400 doesn't have a low range. So if you like to mud a little bit or work it at all that is a plus and the belt will last longer.

I like the full size frame IMO.......Even with my wife at just over 100 lbs. It seems fine for her.......But she did have riding EXP. with ATV's and Snowmobiles.....If there new the Smaller frame may be the way to go......As for the 455 cc motor I have them in my 2006 Sp 450's and they have more then enough power for what we need.......Caper.....

i've owned both and the 08' 400 HO was the last one. the 400 isnt as stable as the 500 and rides no where as good as the 500 or the 450 like caper has(had one of those as well). low range is a nice feature for work for sure, but the 400 HO has a differnt set up then the 500's and most of the time you dont need a low as i've used ours to haul a york rake around w/out any issues. if you want to ever ride 2 peole as well the seat is way nicer on the 500 as well. imo
