Default 96 Trailboss 250 will not start

Ok

I have rebuilt the carb everything is set correct. I have looked over the wiring and found a few bare wires and fixed them and cleaned all the contacts. I have tried to get the flywheel off but it will not budge. yes I took the nut off any secrets? I have a new key just in case but figured if I can't get it off it must be ok. I used a flywheel puller but like I said it will not move. All the boots on the carb are ok. Coil, Plug cap all come out to the correct Ohm reading. With the plug pulled I have spark but I can not pick it up with a inductive timing light at all maybe once every 50th revolution spining it over with a drill as the starter quit

Compression is about 95 Psi cold when it did run it was about 115 PSI warm.

It was running before the carb was rebuilt and then it had a backfire when it started and has not ran since. Before that it was having idling issues, flooding issues hence the carb rebuild. Now I get nothing. It has got to be something simple I am missing. The Battery is shot could it be that? does it need it to start properly? Stupid I know but I am grasping for straws here.

Can the CDI go bad and still have spark? Just in the wrong place?

Any help would be great.

Thanks in advance.

Todd

spray some PB Blaster on the flywheel/crankshaft. you really need to check the woodruff key. compression is a little on the low side, below operating specs. should be 100 psi minimum and 115-120psi optimum.

what does the plug look like? have you tried a different plug? they can show a spark but when put under compression it shorts out.

Was doing some reading of similar problems and saw someone had a similar issue but the crank seals where bad they replaced them and it started right up so I was going to try and pull the flywheel again and I will need to buy or build a puller for the PVT.

The ETC I just looked at to see if it was making contact etc. I didn't meter it out I will look at that first. I think if I pull the black wire on the CDI that will remove it from the equation.

The Plug looks fine I have tried about 8 different plugs. I was going to try and build a device to put the spark plug under pressure and see if it sparked plus figured it would be a cool tool

Will let you know what I find thanks guys. Hope I can fix it soon summer is coming to an end.

cheap clutch puller: a 3/4" bolt grade 8 fine thread. about 4 1/2" long. then a smaller bolt like say a 5/8" or a 1/2" about 2 inches long. cut the head of the smaller bolt and stick it in the center hole of the clutch. then put the 3/4" in the threads of the clutch and push the clutch right off.

just have to make sure you dont mess up the threads on the crankshaft. with the 5/8 or 1/2" bolt there shouldnt be too much worry about that

Ok I FINALLY got the flywheel off I put the puller on it cranked as hard as I could hit it with a hammer etc. Nothing left the pressure on it with PB Blaster on it over night cranked more the next day nothing then hit it a few times again it finally went!!! Bearings feel fine so that is a plus!!

Now I can pull the Clutch and then install the new seals!!

Thanks so far guys!! Wish I could get it done though but I only get a few hours a week to work on it but it is finally looking like a end may be in sight

Will having a better seal on the bottom end help the compression since it is needed to create vacuum? just a thought.

Ok you guys hit the nail on the head. Got the last one changed and she fired on second revolution. Didn't run great but I didn't set the carb yet either still messed from trying to get it to start before. She was smoking pretty good so I would say she is a little rich.

Thanks again for everyone's help!!!

With the seals changed I checked the compression today, it was 118 PSI Cold that is compared to 91 PSI before the seals where changed guess they do make a big difference more air more compression.

She runs great now idles and starts!!

Thanks again everyone.
