Need advice on 1999 Sportsman 500 RSE
#1
I am a newbe to this site (glad i found it) and have some issues with a 1999 Sportsman RSE 500 I acquired it from my sister who had it stored in her shed for 5 years. only has 400 miles on it. I got it running, changed oil, plug, sucked out old gas, took off carb and cleaned it, but here is my problem. When I slow down or release the throttle, it backfires like a shot gun. i know when it sits for a day or two that I have a hard time starting it. I have to put my hand over the carb to get it running. and there is a lot of gas that comes out when I take my hand off. So I am assuming that it is way to rich. how do i adjust this?
Any help would be great!!

Did you take the bowl off the carb and remove the jets and spray carb cleaner through all ports, remove fuel screw on the bottom of carb and spray through that hole, should be set at 2.5 turns out, check the slack in throttle cable should only be 1/8 of an inch, that can cause the backfire.

make sure to clean all the passage ways in the carb as well as he mentioned and also make sure the float is working correctly.. i beleave the 99's also was one of the years w/ bad cams that make t run like crap and loose power.
