550 xp bad axle???
#1
I have a 550 xp. Today while putting around the yard I heard a noise coming from the left rear tire area. It does not do it going straight. I hear it while slowing down and turning left. It may do it while at speed and I just can't hear it. It seems to be coming from cv joint inside the rim? This is definitley a new noise. the machine has about 350 miles on it. Were the axles that were machined wrong noticable right away or after putting some miles on them? The best i can explain the noise is a clicking sound that seems to be coming from the rear tire area. I have heard of the 850 having this issiu but not a 550 yet.Thank you.
Also it was bought in early october so it was a early model.

have read about the 850's axles issues like your self, but just wondering you have checked the cv boot to make sure its not ripped or loose and got crap inside of it. just an idea to check it to make sure thats not it as it does sound like a bad cv joint. good luck.

I just checked the boots. They are all good still. I compared my 850 to the 550 and everything seems the same. I have never had a cv joint go bad so im not sure if it is the same sound.

Is there a way to tell off of serial numbers or anything? My dealer had my model sitting on the showroom floor for months and I got it about 3 weeks ago so I really don't know how long mine was sitting...if he got it right away, sometime in mid-winter, etc...

The build date should be under the right front on a label. I haven't heard of any 550's with this problem but they are supposed to be the same except for the engine's.
Do you have noise coming from the rear? A clicking sound?
Polaris knows about this problem and will replace the axles if they are the one's that were built wrong. This is not a safety issue so there isn't a recall on them. They say they will work fine, with just the nuisance noise.

as much as these machines cost they better fix it. Or tell em you're gonna contact the consumer protection office, that usually makes there ticker beat a little faster! Lol! Don't know where you live but in madison, WI the news channel has what they call 27 trouble shooter, and they take care of all of it. It's usually when people get the run around from a buisiness. The thought of bad publicity makes em change there tune! Lol!
