Default Starter rebuild/2 brush? 98 xplorer 400

Pulled it apart and cleaned it last fall, worked good for a few weeks. Time for a rebuild kit. My problem, don't remember how many brushes my starter has? Most of the kits are pretty straight forward. The kits for a 98 explorer 400 always state..."make sure you have a 2 brush starter". Without pulling the starter first, anyone have a feeling either way, 2 or 4 brush??

Thanks,
Wenty

400's are *generally* 2 brush mistuba starters. problem with these starters is the placement. they seem to soak up water but doesnt let the water back out. makes it a real pain to have to pull the starter about 3 times a season

Yep it would be a two brush. but new starters can be inexpensive, sometimes with starter drive comes with for about 100 usd. but rebuild kit from the same place are about 15 usd I think.

I thought it was a 2 brush but my memory wasn't perfectly clear. Thanks.

I know I have power through the solenoid and to the starter, that was all tested. No need for a new starter, everything was tight and in good shape, I'll just drop a kit in it. Bench test and go with it.

Any thoughts on where to get the kit? I found a kit from DB electrical, $22. Any other options to look in to.

Thanks
