Default My DS1000

Hey everybody, I just wanted to share some pics of my newest project. A while back, I got thinking how cool it would be, if BRP would put their Spyder engine in a DS chassis. I couldn't find a spyder engine, but did manage to come up with a 2005 Yamaha FZ1 engine. This engine is almost identical to their R1 engine, except for a slightly heavier crankshaft. It has 7 H.P less than an R1, but more torque, which is exactly what I wanted for my project. I had seen a few conversions on ebay and youtube, but most of them looked cobbed, so I wanted to keep mine looking as close to stock as possible. I really wanted to be able to use the stock tank & tank cover, and as many other stock DS parts as possible. I retained the EXUP valve in the stock 4 into one exhaust from the FZ1 engine. (Its a servo-actuated valve in the exhaust that maintains the proper amount of backpressure) I put an acropovic slip on on it. It runs really good, has a lot of torque, & it really driveable. The radiator thats in it right now it out of an R6. I have an R1 radiator on the way. The hoses are on opposite sides. I had to make some hoses work for now.

Nice work. I can't imagine running the stock swingarm however. I'm running a +5 on my Kawi ZX7 conversion and it just right. It looks like you trail ride this thing?? You reallly have to get these things out in the dunes to appreciate what they can do...

You can see in the pic the bottom frame rails have been widened. There is no way to fit a 4cyl street bike in the DS without hacking the bottom frame rails

I cut the bottom frame rails & rebuilt them, using 3/4 inch solid tubing. I'm running the stock swingarm, but going to build a wheelie bar, for when I race it. most of the time, I trail ride it, so I don't want to extend the swing arm. One of my goals when I built it, was to keep it looking as stock as possible. I can't believe how much torque it has. I can idle around in first gear through the woods with no problem. Maybe I'll take it hunting :-)

Hopefully, it will pull a pulling sled too.... I tried ATV pulls for the first time, a few weeks ago, with my 04 & 05 DS650's. I put too much weight on the 05, so it didn't do very well. I ended up third in my class with my 04. Can't wait to hook up to the sled with my DS1000. :-)
I made a few new videos yesterday. I'll post them on youtube when I get a chance..
