Rear CV binding after removal
#1
I just replaced the outer rear boot on my brothers '08 Sportsman 500 HO. While working to get the outer CV apart, the inner CV came apart. The pressure ring on the axle shaft pulled out of the inner splined "spider". I popped it back in place and thought all was fine. I got everything back together and now the inner CV binds when turning. If I unbolt the shock and lift the hub to reduce the angle, it feels fine.
What am I missing? Did I not get the inner back together right? I'm ready to buy him a new axle ($307 and 3 day wait) and keep this one for a spare.
thanks....

did you by any chance pull the ***** past thier little endent that holds them in place when you pulled it out? the whole shaft should move all around and in and out w/ out any binding. imo

I didn't pull the boot off to look, but it feels perfectly fine when I have the axle out. When everything is together and bolted up is when it binds.
On a side note, there are 2 axle part numbers listed for the '08. This one has pressure rings holding the axle shaft to the CVs, no more snap rings.

Figured it out. Turns out I'm a dumass. I put everything together but didn't torque anything, just wanted to see if everything seemed alright.
Well, without tightening the axle nut, the inner CV will bind because it is compressed all the way in. Guess your never too old to learn something new.........

CV is good, only pulled out the axle shaft. Does anyone know when Polaris went to the plastic boot instead of rubber? I'm curious how they hold up to normal wear. They don't stand a chance against sticks!

They are more like plastic than rubber if you compare the two. Tougher to put the clamps on because they don't compress as much as the older, softer boots. Call me crazy, but that's my observation.
