Default Is my belt slipping? 2003 Quest 650

Hi. Just purchased a new to me 2003 Quest 650. I have never owned an atv before so I don't really know how it suppose to behave. After I shift it into reverse or HI or LO I have to rev it up a bit before it will take off. It seems worse in reverse. Is there an adjustment on the belt and/or clutch or is this normal? If I do need a new belt is it just take old one off and put new one on?

In low it should move almost the instant you apply any gas. Try a belt change, they just come off and on without a tool like snowmobiles but you have to take the belt cover off thats the only difference.

if it were slipping, you would smell it. the belt is probably just worn.

Thanks I will probably schedule a belt change. So no special tools. Just remove old and place new one on? Is there any adjustments? Do I have to loosen the old belt to remove it? I have no service manual. Would love to find a step by step procedure!

Thanks for the link. I wonder why he did not slip the belt on when he had the clutch off? I still don't understand how that bolt worked to pull the clutch? Looks pretty easy though.

He was just taking the clutch off to inspect it, but out on the trail you just change the belt by hand once the cover is off. I change my belt every 2000 miles even if the belt looks good.

My belt only has 2100km on it that is only 1300miles. I guess that I don't know how the ATV was previously used but it looks to be in great shape. It is 7 years old though. Another question though, how would I know if my clutch was getting bad?

I doubt your clutch is bad, Last time I changed my belt it look great and the ATV still behave decent, but once I put the new belt on the ATV engaged better when the gas was applied and the top end improve slightly. Some people do not use low range at the proper times can wear out a belt in 1300 miles.
