Default honda trx frame rust

All:
My wifes 1993 300 trx and my friends 1997 300 trx both have front end frame rust...
The area under the lower control arms is rusted thru on the bottom. Has anyone else noticed this problem?
The only way I can think of to repaire this problem is to split a piece of pipe and weld it to the bottom of the frame rails. Is this a common problem? Both bikes were used when purchased and needed some tlc but both look and run great.
Thanks for any input or you may want to check your own bike to check for rust.
Thanks
Al

Where do you live? You riding in salt water all the time or what?

There are half a million 300's out there, and you never hear of rust being a problem under normal conditions.

I live in eastern north carolina. both bikes have seen water but not salt....
But they are both rusted in the exact same places...
I run a 04 rancher, no problem yet but I will keep an eye on it.

My buddies '99 TRX 300 Wore Through the frame in those places from hitting rocks over the last 10 years and 35,000 km, a skid plate would have saved the day but no sense wishing for the past. Our plan is also to split a piece of pipe and weld it in place with a MIG welder.

That kind of thing happens after a while. I had an older Suzuki that had similar issues. I just had a guy clean up the rusted through areas and weld some metal to strengthen the frame. Worked great!
