Default 800 Sportsman Gas Mileage Sucks

I have a 08 Sportsman 800 that gets bad gas mileage. My local dealer says its normal, but I ride with another Sportsman 800 and his range is at least 10 to 15 % more that mine. Last week I ran out of gas after about 4 hours of riding. The bad mileage has been that way from new.

How many miles are you getting out of a tank? Are you running hard most of the time for 4 hours? Some of the mpg's will depend on how you ride.

Aftermarket bigger tires? Rider weight (over 300 lbs myself). Your load (storage)? Air filter clean? Type of spark plugs?

Just a few more idears for things to look at....8*)

hard riding about 8 to 10 mpg, where trail(easy) riding about 14 to 18 mpg w/ a 4.13 gallon tank you can pretty much do the math and figure out how far you can go. if the bike hasn't got alot of miles on it, it isn't broke in yet and will be harder on gas.

Expecting 2 different wheelers to get the same fuel mileage is a bit unrealistic IMHO. Even if they're "identical" they'll vary with different riders. I just recently bought an 05 800 and it also seems to have a drinking problem, i think the fuel mapping on these things is WAY rich at all areas of the map. I guess unless you want to get a programmer and spend time trying to dial in the fuel map, just stay out of the throttle as much as possible if miles or hours per gallon is your main concern.

I only can get 50 miles out of a tank on my 07 700, and that's when it sputters out and dies, I always refill around 40ish

Thanks for the input.
What type of riding do you do?
We ride some trails, some mud some streets.
It really does not matter what type of riding we do it seems I only get 50 miles and it dies.
Went to Hatfield McCory last year and had to fill up in each town 2 times a day.
Love the ATV, tons of power and a good ride, just bad mileage.
