Default Need Help*Sportsman 700

Hey guys, I have a 2004 sportsman 700. It has sat for a while, but i have now replaced the battery. It will turn over and start but it will only stay on for a very short time. It will get to about 750 rpms then it turns off. A few of my buddies told me i might just have to clean the carb. Any help/suggestions are welcome! Also what would yall suggest as of an exhaust and air filter? Just post links or whatever, thanks!

well if it's a carb modle and has been sitting for a lenght of time then maybe the gas has gone bad and the carb will have to be removed and cleaned real good. also check the carb boot when you remove it for any craks as some were known to have them causing them to run crappy. replace the gas in the tank as well. check to make sure the air box and exhaust isn't packed full of crap from mice or what not making nest. start w/ that.

Sten is on the right track. Sounds like you will definitely need to clean the carb and tank out. If it is ever going to sit for any length of time be sure to use fuel stabilizer and run some sea foam in your gas periodically.

Remove the carb, drop the bowl and remove float. Spray all passeges with carb cleaner/pressurized air and reassemble. Discard old gas - kill some ants. Replace gas and use STABIL gas stabilizer after refilling tank.

Got any buddies that know? If you arent mechanicly incline maybe you'd better get some help, the pilot jet is probably plugged in the carb, needs a good cleaning and fresh gas.

if you dont feel comfortable taking a carb off and apart, then don't do it as it will cause more greif and cost money in the long run if you mess it up. i agree that if it takes staring fluid to get it to start then pilot and other things are most likely plugged.
