Default Air cooled fan

I have a 96 xplorer I just got and it had a fan zippy tied to the front grill. What is the proper mounting location for the fan and how is it wired? It is not wired currently and my manual talks about a switch, but it is referring to the liquid cooled engines. I didn't think air cooled engines needed a fan? Thanks, John

the 300's had fans too. just to help them out a bit. the fan should be mounted farther back about where the steering stem is. the temp. senser should be on the left side of the motor
