97 sportsman 500 question.....

Well i brought it home for $2000. He wouldn't budge as It has a brand new Cycle Country plow on it that has never been used until tonight. Plowed the drive out good! The only issue i can see is the trans does not like going forward to reverse. If it goes in forward good it don't go into reverse worth a darn. If you adjust it till it goes into reverse good it don't go into forward for crap. Blip the throttle either way and it goes in with just a tad bid of noise. BTW, It has 14,300 miles on it! (had 10,000 on it when he bought it) Just had the primary and secondary rebuilt as well as a new belt 300 miles ago.
One question, The guy has the fan on a toggle switch. Says it was that way when he bought it. I can just turn it on and leave it run but i would rather have it automatic. Don't know if the idiot light works though so is there a way to put a manual temp gauge on it??

You were looking new...for a machine that will plow and get you 20 miles from no where to hunt...what made you decide on a overpriced polaris that's not properly shifting, the fan not properly working and has 14 THOUSAND miles??

Gonna be a work vehicle for now just to plow. Not a bank in the world would look at my company as i don't have 3 years of tax records under my belt so to hell with them!! I even took my P&L showing $14,000 + - of accounts receivables and had $2500 down but it didn't mean a thing. This bike runs fine with no smoke or funny noises from the engine. Most of the miles are highway miles and i have seen some with 25-30K miles on them up in these parts. Starts right up and if worse comes to worse i can put a used tranny in it for $250. Was it really over priced? Plow is worth $500. New ITP's on the back and what's it cost to service the clutches? I figured i paid about $1000 for the bike in the end. Could EASILY part it out for more than that.

hey if your happy w/ your purchase then we shouldn't say anything bad. most likely i would doa complete fluid service if you don't when it was done last. maybe the temp sensor was bad as why they hooked up the fan to a toggel switch. personally i would have it working off the sensor and not the switch so it doesn't use more power then needed and wear out the fan prematurely. imo.

I would have rather had a new or newer one but none to be found out here for under $3000 and then i would have to buy a plow. Dependability is what you make it. I currently cover 30,000 sq miles of Western Montana with my business and drive 2 paid for 18 yr old vehicles both have 140K miles on them and i maintain them well. Both vehicles repairs and tires cost me less than 3 new truck payments last year and both were purchased for $2500 cash money with just under 100K miles. I watch for good deals. I saved over $12,000 last year driving paid for rigs over having new with payments. You do the math over 10 years........
BTW, Gonna go with this.... ATV parts, ATV tires, Quadovator ATV Accessories

When I read your other thread it just sounded like you were buying new...understandable, financing can be tough in this economy. Just kind of shocking...new to a 14 thousand mile machine.
The used atv market must be tough out that way.

I am happier without a payment anyhow. It was nice to write a check and get the title. "The borrower is slave to the lender" Stopped at the dealer today. Tech told me the clutch rebuild was worth $375. I have a new plow which is around $500 so i really don't have a lot in the bike. Plowed 6 driveways today. It's already paid me back 15% in one day.......
