Hello all.

I just bought a 2009 550 XP (new) and I was just wondering if anyone out there had any words of advice for a new owner??

By the way this is my first Polaris and so far I like it.

I have a few questions that maybe someone can provide advice on.

1. Should I add the extended warranty? 2 ($850), 3($1100) or 4($1600) years.

2. When is it recommended to have the first service done (oil change)? I read in the manual that is says after 20 hours, but the "hours to next service" on the bike's display says 42 hours. The bike has ~11 hours on it now.

3. What type of oil is recommended for use in these atvs. I am a strong believer in synthetic oil and I would very much like to use it. Is there a recommended synthetic oil for these bikes?

IMO stay with Polaris recommendations all the way. I;ve done that with all my Po's and haven't had a problem but its slightly more expensive. Best ride on the market. No special advice needed. Have fun.

 

1. i would say yes, but not at those prices. my dealer quoted me $450 for 2 yrs.

Those warranty prices are probably Canadian $.

 

You can try and talk him down on the warranty prices. I opted out on a warranty.
Change out as many fluids as you can afford at the 20 hour interval. During that time the vehicle is breaking in and the oil and other lubricating fluids will be apt to contain metal particulates. After that, just follow the manual. As for the fluids themselves? Well, I can find NO information on the Polaris 2w-50 oil that they recommend. I am trying to find out who really makes it, if it is a true synthetic (PAO base) oil, or a group III, and why they went to a 50 weight. Also, I've never heard of a 2w oil before and wonder if using something like the Amsoil 0w-40 ATV oil would be a better choice. So far, no luck. If I can get no answers I'll stick with the 'synthetic' Polaris oil.

 

20 hours is the standard for the 1st oil change. After that it is at a 50 hour interval. The service interval can be set at any hour level you choose on your machine but it is set at 50 from the factory settings.

You can use NAPA/Wix filters and Mobil1 oil which can save a few $$$. Make sure you use SYTHETIC..it is a must.

Warranty is only as good as the dealer that you are dealing with. A good dealer will ensure as many things are covered but a sorry dealer will not fight to get items covered.

I have had four Sportsmans (7 in the family) and have had excellent luck with the machines. I hope you enjoy yours; you certainly purchased a model I would like to eventually upgrade to.

 

Still can't find out what I want to know about the Polaris oil (who makes it, synthetic base makeup, why 50 weight from 40). I did find out that Red Line makes a real good, true synthetic (ester based) 5w50 oil. I will use that....they make some of the very best oils and I've always liked their marketing and honesty.

 

what about royal purple 15-40 is this too heavy? I got alot of it from racing sponsor..i am in the deep south where it get redonkious hot during summer...

 

Someone posted awhile back that he was able to get a 2yr for $250.00. The prices you were quoted are way way out of touch.

 

No one is saying this with the NEW XP's but are they giving free Safety Course with the purchase and a $100 credit to the Polaris store? Well I bought two quads and never cashed in on the deal, after thinking about it, I could take the wife, drive a little ways and have FUN in the course and go on a $200 shopping spree (Polaris OEM).

I'm a idiot! (Do these offerings expire?)
