Painting ATV rims
#3
The silver rims on my Foreman were really chipped and beat up. When I put on new tires, I just wiped them down with mineral spirits, and sprayed them.
So far so good. I don't expect spray paint to hold up well, but it will be easy to touch up.
I'm just not into dumping $$$ on blingy wheels for a machine who's purpose is to be run around in rocks, dirt, and mud.

I had to get some new rear rims to fit my exacutioners and then painted the front to match. I just scuffed them up with some steelwool and then wiped them down with laquer thinner and painted them. The only places they have chipped is where I didn't scuff good with the steelwool. But like mentoned above, they are easy to touch up. Autozone has a paint specially formulated for rims and is chip resitant. It is awsome.

Key is prep work. Sand them down and clean them very well. I used duct tap around the rims & pushed the tape between the rubber and wheel with a screwdriver. I covered the rubber part of the tire with old towels. I painted them with Dupli-color truck bed liner spray. They turned out perfect & easy touch up if you make a error. Let them dry several hours before the 2nd coat. It gave the quad a stealth look. BTW I did not paint the inside of the rim. I felt it looked much better that way giving it a 2 tone affect.

NICE! I had a buddy that was determined to paint the stock wheels on his 400ex black. We did the same MrThor said and cleaned the heck out of them first. Then he used some cheap Krylon after a primer coat. I was shocked they held up the way they did. With only a few nicks year and a half later. I know a better paint would be a great option that I would be willing to try. Go MrThors route and I don't think you'll have an issue.

Those look cool...
If the paint on mine doesn't hold up, I may sand blast and try the dupli-color bed liner.

I did the same with my 07 Rincon that I had. I got the idea after looking at the new camo XP when it came out. I thought it looked nicer then just the standard black wheels. On these I used the krylon camo and matched it to the camo of the Rincon. I also painted the fuelpak camo. That turned out very nice!

My brother owns a bump/paint shop. If your going to just show the quad and not actually ride it in mud/water/debree, than the method some of these guys tell you in here is going to be OK .
HOWEVER, if you want the rims/paint to hold up in the worst of conditions, better POWDER COAT them.
Dont say I did'nt warn you!
