Question 2007 Sportsman 800 water ingestion?

Just joined the forum and I would like to run this by you guys. I just purchased a '07 800 with 80 hours (cheap) with an known engine problem. It runs badly, has engine noise and hardly enough power to pull itself onto the truck. It was pretty clean on the outside but as I tore it down started to see issues. The airbox was nasty and signs of dirty water in all the intake tubes. No signs of dirty water past the air filter though. As I pulled all the plastic off, it shows signs of heavy muddy water up to the headlight pod (and I havent looked in there yet). Engine noise appears to be upper end but hard to tell. I haven't tested compression yet because not down that far. I cleaned the bike in anticapation of pulling the engine (waiting for my shop manual to arrive.) My question is: Doesnt water ingestion usually bend rods which would cause a none running condition or can the damage be something else.

Does the engine burn oil? More than likely it could have water in the gear box as well. I would also check the auto clutch to see if there is water in it. there is a drain plug on the underside of it. If this gets wet or water in it it will slip making it seem like it has no power. DO check this! It is meant to be dry and works like a snowmobile clutch.

I have only had the machine running for a minute or two and it is not smoking. If there was any water in the clutch it probably would have long dried up. I think this happened last fall but not sure. I will be pulling the clutch cover off tonight and I expect to see dried up mud.

did you check the oil before you ran it to make sure there wasn't oil in the bike? i would do a complete fluid change for the bike if you don't know the history and you know it's been in water. does it smoke, does it sound like a piston knock? pull out the spark plug and take a look, andf do a compression check. if it got that much water in the engine, it should have been in the oil as well. imo.

I just pulled the clutch cover and it has been full of muddy water also , I took the headlight pod apart to unhook the vent for the gas tank and it shows signs of the muddy water. This thing has been deep! Someone must have just changed the oil because it is clean as new oil. I have pulled the plugs but havent check compression yet. Thats next
