Default 1997 Sportsman 500 no spark

Hi, I am new to the forum, and looking forward to your help.

I have a 1997 Sportsman 500 with spark only when just letting off of the start switch. No spark while pulling over by hand. I have tested connections, and I currently have the flywheel off looking for possible issues. I have a wiring diagram from a 2001 model, which looks to be pretty much the same, but I'm not sure where I should have power or how I can test the pulse coils.

Thanks, Cory

welcome to the forum. did you try to pull start it before you took offf the fly wheel? sometimes it will pull start even though it won't w/ the starter.

Yes, I stated that in the post, when only seeing spark when letting off of the button(sometimes), I figured that it was a low power issue, but I get no spark when pull starting. I'm stumped.

Should I be able to see a pulse to the coil on the b/w wire using a test light?

ETC switch is working properly.

I tried unplugging the black wire from the cdi, but then I can't get spark at all.

If you have the correct wiring diagram, not sure if the 2001 model is same or not. The polaris diagrams usually have ohm values for the components you need to check. I went through all this on my 97 Sport 400L just the other day, waiting on a cdi module. Everything checked good per the manual on mine. let me know if you need values.

My money would be on the pulse/pickup coil under the flywheel.

Default spark

check your trigger coil gap between coil and raised area on out side of flywheel.I think its 20 to 40 thousands also check the ohm reading and check wires were they go out of the motor through the grommet.

I found out through some help from John at jetskisolution.com that the trigger coil was bad. He replaced it, and everything came back better than new.

This is the second stator that I have had him do, and I know it sounds funny, but his wiring is better than it came from the factory.

Default 97 sportsman 500 spark problem

I have the same problem only one spark when you let off the starter button, what was the fix? Put new stator and trigger but trigger looks different.

Welcome to the forum! Try sliding the emergency switch on and off several times, plus push the reverse over ride button in several times. Could be corrosion build up?? If that doesn't help remove the black wire from the cdi (if it cranks, will have to plug wire back up or choke it down to kill it) Don't know if this helps? OPT

I had John from Jetski Solutions rebuild my stator and wiring harness. Fixed everything.

Very fast service and reasonable prices.
