2005 atp always in AWD
#1
Hello
I recently picked up a 2005 ATP 500HO. Bought it off craigs list, real nice machine, about 1100 miles, clean, blah blah blah.
Anywho, I have been ripping around the lake (live in MN) quite a bit this winter, and noticed that this thing, no matter what, is always in AWD. The switch has 3 options awd/2x4/turf. No matter what setting that is in, I will always have all 4 on, even in reverse without hitting the override button. To further clarify, if I put it on an ice rink and just slowly apply throttle, i will have all 4 wheels spinning instantly, independent of any switch setting, low gear, high gear, reverse. There is no combination where I am not using all 4 wheels.
Now dont get me wrong, there probably wont be a whole lot of times that I wont be in 4x4 with this thing, but it sucks to drive it on pavement when turning, etc, when all 4 are engaged, plus that turf mode would be nice for my lawn this summer.
Former owner said it was always fine for him (of course), said that when towing he would have to switch it into awd after he began spinning. Thing has all maintenance records, the front fluid was changed about a year ago. I called the local polaris shop, the guy said it wasnt right and it had to be "something electrical" that would require taking the speedo apart and likely charging the living you know what out of me.
I am not bad taking toys apart, but don't really know where to start here. Anybody have any suggestions??
Thanks in advance,
Matt

You are suggesting that that part that may be broken keeps it in awd, and can slip out? If I am reading that correctly, then im not sure thats it, cause my problem is the thing wont ever come outof awd...

it happened to a few differnt people on where they say that the awd is stuck in or it only has 1 wheel working. there have been differnt things on differnt bikes and it may not be on yours. but it is a front end issue for sure if it wont come out of awd. imo.
