The head gasket from the 86-87 use's the paper type head gasket instead of the metal gasket for the 88-89. The ATC 85-86 is the same as the 86-87 gaskets.

I put the metal CR250 gasket in my 86 R, and I am only getting 150 psig compression on a fresh top end (well broken in now) when I was expecting around 175, could this be why? it runs fine otherwise.

I have heard that 89 will work

I just saw that TRX250R87 (replyed to your post on Mac Dizzy) said 89 will work also.

Yes the 89 CR gasket will work. You can also buy a 3-part TRX gasket and drill out the 2 small holes so that the gasket comes apart. Now you can use the 2 thin parts as 2 gaskets. To make them seal better spray both sides a couple of times with Permatex liquid copper in a can.
I would think that your compression should be around 180psi.
I am running this setup right now with 2 base gaskets and a 21cc coolhead adn have about 185psi.

If you run 185 or 210psi, do you need high octane fuel? Or will pump gas work fine?

For a stock engine (other than boosting compression) i do not think you want to go far over 180 or you might have to use at least a mix of race and pump
