Default Honda TRX350D Cam Timing

Being brand new to the site I posted this in the introduction section so I'll try again.
I have just bought a TRX350D with a serious top end rattle, It could actually be something inside the cylinder.
I have not yet got a manual though I have one on order from the USA, Before I remove the cam chain & cam, How do I set the engine in position so that I can refit them at a later date(Is there a timing mark or dowel to lock the crank in place?)
Someone has done a real bodge where the cam attaches to the cam sprocket, It looks as though one of the threaded holes in the cam has cracked off and they have put a bolt in and welded it to the cracked part and cam sprocket.
This seems to have held ok may be a problem when I try to remove the cam chain to release the head (If need be I can cut the weld and replace the damaged parts)
The TRX350D does not seem to be a common machine over here in the UK so I don't want to replace any more parts than I have to.
Is this engine fitted to any other models which may be more popular?
Sorry to be long winded, But maybe someone with more knowledge can help.
Many Thanks
Malc
