05 Brute 650, sputters, dies??
#1
Trying to help a bud trouble shoot, I'm not real familiar with the kawi...
It's a 05 Brute 650 4x4 carbed.
Starts up idles great. Get on it and run it hard, after a mile or so it will sputter, backfire and die. Choking it doesn't help. Come to a stop it will fire right back up and idle fine. Get going again, say half throttle and it will sputter, backfire and die again.
Fuel pump checks out, tank vent checks out. Don't think it's the stator as it will fire right back up and idle fine.
Thoughts??

First off i'll add...my bud just bought this atv. He brought it to a kawi dealer to have this taken care of thinking it was a simple fix...lol! The dealer ran a vin check, turns out this machine has been in to service 7 times since new for this issue, and it's first service was at 40 miles. So this issue has been a going on since new.
Tank vent was check by removing the gas cap so there was plenty of venting. The fuel pump was checked by the dealer, he undid the fuel line and cranked it over and said it was spitting out fuel...I thought, and relayed to him that I didn't feel that was a thorough enough check on the fuel pump. I will relay to him the vacuum as a possible culprit.
I've been doing lots or reading on various sites regarding his ATV. From what I'm reading it seems like these carbs are finicky and seem to be the cause for issue on many of these bikes. But, after the 8th visit to dealer service one would think if it was a carb issue it would have certainly been checked and taken care of?? In my research I see there is a aftermarket carb kit many talk about thats supposed to take care of the backfire/lose of power?
After so many dealer visits I came to the conclusion that he/we could do our research and by process of elemination figure out what's going on....dealers aren't getting it done???
Any leads and we'll start going through them and crossing off the list.

Let's start fresh and we will get it fixed.
Fuel Tank Vent
Get a wire piece about 10" long, little thinner than a coat hanger wire, and push into the plastic molded spigot(s) on the fuel tank after removing the vent hose from it - some quads have 2 in, one on right rear by fuel cap and the other by left rear. Check both spigots. The wire must go through all the way.
Fuel Pump Vacuum Source
There is a small brass fitting spigot on the right side of the rear cyl head. Remove the black rubber vacuum hose and push in the same above wire piece into the spigot hole and make sure it is a thru hole.
Let me know what you find.
