LT 80 Engine Cover?

LT 80 Engine Cover?
My daughters 03 LT80 has some kind of black cover over the cylinder and head. Does this cover have to stay on? I would think that the cooling fins would get more air to them if this cover was off instead of through the snorkels. I was thinking that it might be a safety cover so kids dont get burned, but my kids always ride in pants and boots. I would like to take this cover off, will that cause any problems? Thanks
