Stock tires - Sportsman 500HO.
#1
Hi All,
When I was checking out the 500HO, I completely forgot to look to see what brand of tires is on it. How good are the factory tires?
I am looking at road riding, and some trail riding. Once I find some good trails around here, I will ride the road to get to them. We are allowed to ride the roads in Ontario.
If I had to replace them, what is a good tire, with both uses in mind?
The atv will have stock steel rims on it. Thanks,
WIll

I saw a 500 HO at a dealership we stopped at up in NH. It had Carlisle 489s on it. 3 ply tire. Decent tread. I had them on my X2 for about 1300 miles before going to ITP Mudlite XTRs. The 489s lasted pretty well. We ride a mix of hard pack, some soft sand, snow, ice, rocks, and lots of mud and water. They never failed me and I got through everything I tried. Got one gouge on the sidewall that required 3 plugs to fix. Lasted from about original 300 miles until I went to the new treads. If you don't have tons of mud to deal with you might try Maxxix Bighorns. Lots of guys swear by them. Good mix but not a dedicated "mud" tire.

the Carlisle 489s are a great tire, the ATP's are way to aggressive they tear up everything when riding. A guy in our hunt club has a set of the ITP MUD LITES and he was tearing up all of the fields when riding around. He went to some Carlisle 489s and they go through mud just as well

Don't forget guys that some sportsmans came with the carlisle ACT's which I think are a phenomenal tire for stock. The 489's are good to but don't hold a candle to the ACT's IMO. If you have either of the two I mentioned I think you'll be happy with them.

I think the 500 HO is the most basic of the 500 and up quads Polaris is making right now. I'm pretty sure it's shod with the 489s which are a pretty good tire all around. I agree with the comments about the ITP Mudlites. They are aggressive and you probably don't need a tire quite that gnarly.

When you look at the stock tires that other quads come with, the 489's are one of the best. I miss mine since going to the zilla's. 489's ride nice and do good on trail and not bad in the mud.
They last longer then most other stock tires and have a little bigger lug as well.
My zillas will run circles around my 489's but they dont ride as smooth.
I agree with kerbirds that bearclaws would be the tire for you. They last forever and do great on road and trail. also they are easy on the pocket book.
For what it sounds like what you want them to do the 489's will suit you just fine.
