Default Looking at a 2002 Scrambler 500 4x4 have some questions for the experts.

Might pick this Scrambler up on a whim to tinker with if it is a good deal. I have alot more experience with Polaris Utility ATVs than I do the Scrambler. I haven't even ridden a Scrambler in probably 8 or 9 years so I figured I'd ask here since I know there are several Scrambler expert members. What should I look for when I go check it out? THings that commonly wear/fail if maintenance hasn't been kept up?

The owner claims it will do 80 MPH??? Is that likely? If so I assume it has to be modded right? They bought it as it is and don't know if anything has been done to it.

Thanks in advance.

Basically the same as a utility with better suspension and less weight.Great all around trail rider bike.
The seller is TOTALLY full of BS on the top speed.Even highly modded you can only get 65-67 MPH tops stock a shade less than 65.Modding just get you there quicker and puts more power where you need it.
It looks to have a stock pipe and tires. With a TRailblazer seat and no had light bracket.May have been wrecked or lost out of a truck.
Check it over real close. If decnt and rear bearings, swing arm bushing, tie rod ends and ball joints ore good.Dont smoke or knock bad it would be worth $1500-$2000.Any of that is bad knock off price of parts and labor to repair.

YEah I figured the top speed was BS...kind of funny they would lie about it since I never asked and don't really care. Wouldn't catch me going over 50 on it any way.
They are asking $1900 but I negotiated down to $1600 contingent on it being in good condition.
What is the best way to check the swing arm bushings and the carrier bearing..can I do it with the machine on the ground? Also can you ball park parts and labor for replacing the bushings and bearing if they are worn? Just a guesstimate to work with. If they need replacing I would do it myself. The other stuff I am pretty famililar with checking.
Thanks for the great info ftwflh.

To check the swing arm I usually pick the back end up while a buddy tries to shake the swing arm side to side. With the weight off of it you will be able to tell pretty easy if there is something wrong with it.

Bring a floor jack and raise the rear then push and pull the axle forward and back then side to side. If there is any play it will be bearings for the axle and bushings for the swing arm. If you have an atv jack/lift then lift the whole thing off the ground and start it and put it in awd to see if all four wheels turn. Maybe even rub a 2x4 against each front wheel trying to stop it to see if the front hilyards (sp) are working. Look around the output sprocket at the rear chain to see if the chain derailed and broke the case or look for jb weld in that area. Look at the end of the sprocket shaft and make sure the sprocket was not welded onto the shaft. Wiggle the front tires in and out to see if the tie rods are loose. Yank the bottom of the frt wheel in and out to see if the ball joints are loose. See if the brass bushings are in place on the front control arms front and rear pivot points. See if the back brake works and look into the caliper and how much brake pad is left. Pull the rope to see if it rotates the engine. Wiggle the handle bars back and forth to see if there is play in the lower bushing. Chesk the bulbs and look for plugs in the tires. All possible negotiation points. Remove the seat and check the filter condition. Good luck! I love my Scrambler.

I call the Scambler a Sportsman with no low range and a chain drive straight axle. My cousin has a 2001,same frontend, awd hub system,struts,rad,motor,pipe,speedo... His tops out at 63 mph stock,

When he goes on ebay for parts,he looks under Sportsman because there are more listings than under scrambler.
