Default Stupid questions I guess...

So I bought an Explorer 300 from a buddy yesterday. And I already have a few stupid questions. To engage the 4 wheel drive do you push the button in or out?
I feel completly dumb asking this but... I didn't get a manual with it and a light (he said he thought there was a light ) didn't come on either way. So now I don't know which. Can I just swith at will between two and four wheel drive or do I need to be stopped before engaging? Finally, will it stay in four will drive in reverse and what does the override button do. I know most of you are doing this -> right now but I really am new to this and could use some direction. Any help is appreciated.

Ahhh took it for a ride just now messin around in the woods and the AWD lite came on. Didn't see it yesterday in the yard but it's prety dim and that makes perfect sense. Still wondering about the override.

Ahhh again. Looking on eHow a guy explained the override switch. I feel like a Sherlock Holmes trying to learn all this stuff.

Trial and error sometimes are the best teachers.

The light could just have a loose/bad/dirty connection.

The override button isn't an uncommon question either. I see you got that one figured out.

I think on the new 4wd models, there was a "trick" to making the 4wd work in reverse. None of the ones I have now are 4wd, so I'm not sure what that trick is.

If I remember correctly, and I've been wrong before, the button pushed in engages the 4wd.

To have 4x4 in reverse you must hold the over ride button in. If you release it, you will go back to 2 wheel. Likewise for backing up fast. You need to hold the button. When in 2 wheel drive you can switch into 4x4 on the fly, but!!! NEVER!!! switch into 4x4 while the rear wheels are spinning faster than the front. Like spinning in the mud and you realize you need 4x4. Some guys just leave the 4x4 switched on all the time which hurts nothing since the 4x4 only engages when needed automatically. OH! It's always better to ask if you don't know. Never a stupid question

Asking operational questions about your quad is never dumb, better to ask than wreck something, now dumb would be asking about blinker fluid or muffler bearings !!!!!

Guess I'd better clarify that.

I meant by just searching the internet in gereral, i.e. Google.

Not going out and physically trying something you're not sure it's made to do.

there is no stupid question when you don't know the answers.

Thanks guy's. Like I said I'm really new to this. I had a blast with it yeasterday. But ended up with a few more questions... There is a yellow pull stick (looks like a transmission fluid or oil check stick possibly??) on the side. Any ideas? and soooo yeasterday I jumped on it and gave my son a spin down to the end of the neighbourhood and back. Got it into the garage and realized I had the gas **** turned to off. It ran fine but when we got back to the house instead of ideling it shut down. Thats when I realized what I had done. Did I mess something up for good or will I be ok? Thanks again all.

Think you're looking at the transmission dip stick.

Running it with the gas turned off won't hurt anything. I know someone who didn't turn the gas back on after trailering it, and took off out on the trail. I... I mean they, couldn't figure out what happened at first. Then saw what was wrong.
