A friend bent an axle on a 1982 Argo. The dealer wants about $300 for a new axle and bearing assembly. From what I can gather the new axle is somehow different from the original one.

Q1. Has anyone had any luck straightening the old axles? Will machine shops or spring shops do this for you, and do they have good success?

Q2. Does anyone know of a source for used axles for a beast of this vintage? Do YOU have any that you want to part with? Is there a dead Argo parked in the back yard?

Q3. Does anyone know of a reasonable source for new replacement axles?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

My brother had an axle on his maxIV 6x6 straightened, at a machine shop and bought bearings from a local
bearing dealer by taking in the old ones and having them measured....
check out this site it may help.....

I just finished rebuilding an Argo, it is a 93 8x8 and I replaced every axle with the new style and I have all the old ones still, you are welcome to as many as you need (if it will fit). that price seems high for new, I only paid 50 bucks an axle and the bearing is 25.00 anyway Email me if you need one I'm just going to throw them away.

Deej, a bent axle can be straitened at a machine shop for around $10. However, the axle will never be as strong as it was before, and the old axles need all the strength they can get. The new ones are much better made.

You can see the Argo at www.ArgoATV.com or check out the whole world of 6x6s on my site at www.maxatvs.homestead.com .

Yep... My bro bent his axle a couple of times on his MAX. He has had it straightend a couple of times also, but it gets weaker the more times you do that. But it can be done...I just suggest not too often.
