Default 99 Sportsman 500 overheating

Gents, Thanks for reading this. I couldn't find a post similar to it. My atv has the correct level of coolant, the fan seems to run fine, the radiator fins are not plugged with mud or weeds. Under normal riding conditions (no hot rodding, level ground at about 8000 ft of elevation) and after the atv is up to normal operating temp, the atv will overheat when it idles for more than a couple minutes (the red light comes on). After I ride it for a few minutes, the red light will go off. This problem is very repeatable. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am thinking it could be the thermostat or water pump???
Thanks!

Maybe the there air in the coolant system causing a air lock and it needs to be bled/burped out.

Also the thermostat in the side of the motor at water line is not fully opening.

OR

Thermal switch that tells the fan to come on and off may need to be changed,it screws into the rad. But if fan works I doubt its that.
