Chinese 4x4 Quads
#1
Most of the info and talk on this site is about the small, 250cc and below, inexpensive Chinese quads. Does anybody here own here own a big Chinese utility quad? I would really like to hear from any who have experience with the big Chinese 4x4 untilities. Vbikes has a 700cc 4x4, Liquid cooled, Auto trans with hi and lo range, disk brakes all around and even comes with a winch. You can get one for $4500 if you pick it up. Thats half what a quad with smilar specs from one of the Japanes/American makers would cost. Sure would like to see somebody test one of these against a Yamaha or Honda or Suzuiki or Polaris or whatever.

Ive got quite a few Chinese power sports products. As childrens toys to be ridden in the yard - I think they are great and serve a purpose if you know what your doing with a wrench.
As useful machines you expect to work with or play hard with.....nope, wouldnt even bother getting one off the trailer.
Ive read only a few horror stories.....but Ive never read a success story.
Again, if you were looking for something to pull a little trailer around to do some gardening....yeah, I think a large Chinese ATV would do the job. Light work, light loads.....tame terrain....it would last a long time.
If you want to go play in the mud, rocks and trails.....I bet money your going to go home early and broke down every day. Then your going to spend a week sourcing parts, figuring out what interchanges etc.
Buy a good used machine and save the hassle.

Well, In my opinion it all comes down to what you want. I have an ODES 400cc and I love it...never had a problem with it. I bought it in the crate and did the PDI myself and did a few preventative upgrades(Fram oil filter, synthetic Blend oil,2 stage air filter ect) as well loctyte is your best friend.
If you take care of your **** it will last....I wash mine after every ride and check everything every two weeks.
People who buy chinese products especially Dirtbikes expect that it should handle MX tracks and or 10ft jumps!!.....These are TRAIL MACHINES and should be used for the trails not jumps or mudholes that go up to your seat. My quad can climb or go through anything...but I don't put it through water and mud that go past my seat...then your asking for trouble.
Here is mine..

To each there own....just remember everything breaks..

From what you can see from BDI's machine, the Chinese 4x4's are getting better. The welds look excellent, the suspension bushings have zerks on them, fit/finish looks better than the past, etc.. I completely agree that they are fine for adult trail and utility use. Give it to a kid that will beat the tar out of it and it's going to break before an $8000 machine will. My only personal issue is; ~$4000 is a lot of money. I'd just assume go 'broker' and get a brand name that's been around forever. Then again... the way I use this stuff, a Chinese 4x4 would last me forever??!?!?!

Is that a picture when new? If so do you have a picture of what it looks like now? How many miles/hours have you used it?

My machine has about 500kms on it and it looks the same as it did new. I wash it after every ride and wipe down any accessible part. When I took it out of the crate I applied 5-6 coats of Plexis and man...cleaning is a breeze. The mud just falls off with a garden hose. I check all connections and reapply dyelectric grease when needed and regrease the bearings every 4th ride....I recheck all nuts/bolts as a precaution and as well wipe clean the ECU.
I have a buddy who owns his own bike repair shop and the stuff he gets you think that they haven't washed since they got it, so you know they don't take care of there things.
Again..its all how you take care of it..

I agree about your statement is all how you take care of it. I also think thats the exact thing that keeps Chinese powersports running.
The Chinese ATVs I have here get cleaned once a week, oil change once a month and greased, bolts tightened and the ATV gone over. Ive had only a few electrical problems (which likely would have been a non-issue if Id go as far as you do with your connection checking and di-electric grease).
I also have never needed to take that kind of care of my Suzuki and Honda ATVs to keep them in good running shape. Blow the mud off once in a while and change oil as required by the manual....thats its. Not saying I shouldnt take that kind of care of them....just due to priorities it doesnt happen.
I think Chinese power sports are great....they allow people to get into the sport that may not otherwise be able to. They are a cheaper alternative that still allow for good times.
.....but just remember, they are a CHEAPER alternative......not an equal alternative. Everything Chinese Ive owned required more wrenching, more maintenance and care then the equivalent product from any of the known big manufacturers.
If your capable of that kind of care and can turn a wrench.....it may be a great alternative for you.
If your going to buy a Chinese ATV and not give it some special attention and consideration - dont expect it to hold up like a Honda.
Give it 10 years and the quality may come up to that level....but the price may follow.
