I was talking to my brother and he said to not get a hi-comp. piston because they wear considerably faster than a stock piston. Is this true? If so, how much faster? Do you always have to run race gas with these HC pistons? What are some goods and bads of both? Thanks everybdy.

 

If you change your oil like you should, you won't wear anything down fast at all on a 4 stroke. And no, you wont have to run race gas, premium would do fine. And you would definitely get more power from the high comp. piston.

 

I got a considerable amount of power when I added the high compression piston. It hastn seemd to wear out any faster and I run just plain old premium in it.

 

Anybody else have knowledge on this subject?

 

The wear aspect I am not sure... but from what I have been told by people I know running high compression pistons, and LRD who has my quad right now... anything over 10.5:1 will require race gas, around that 10.5:1-11:1 you may get away with av gas. To run pump gas will cause detonation which can and will destroy a engine. I do not know a whole lot about this, I am just relaying what I have been told. Each bike may be different, but I would inquire with a reputable builder about your specific machine, to find out for sure.....

 

what they told you isn't really bad, but it sounds like LRD was just covering themselves legally. You can run usually up to 12:1 on premium. Now if it sounds bad, change it quick, but i know of several stock dirt bikes(yz250f, and 426f) that both have stock compression of about 12:1, and yamaha just recommends premium.

 

With a higher compression piston, since more pressure is being applied to the top of the piston, there is more stress and wear on all moving parts affected by the combustion process. Comparing 2 stroke compression and 4 stroke compression is like apples and oranges.
It's best to consult a capable engine builder that is familiar with the engine before doing mods that you will regret later.

 

You can run any piston up to 12:1 on regular pump gas (92-94)

The only time your piston is going to wear faster is if you change from a forged to a cast piston.
Cast pistons fit tighter and are a softer compound and must be changerd more often .
Wiseco and most other forged pistons like the stock will out last any cast piston no matter what the compression may be.
A Wiseco piston or other GOOD after market forged piston will out last even the cheap stock one.Not to mention they are lighter wich causes less stress on the rod and crank and helps smoothen engine vibrations.
The Raptor engine was greatly de-tuned for safty and reliability and buy bumping up the compression a bit will not hurt the engine one bit! the engine is designed to put out up to 70HP and more.

 

The stock banshee pistons are cast. Are you sure that the Raptor pistons are forged?

So if I put a 11:1 100mm Forged Piston and A High performance Camshaft(Powroll) would I have to run Race Gas? If so, Could get pump gas 92-94 and put octane booster in? Should I do this?
