honda rancher smoking need help

Default honda rancher smoking need help

i have a 2001 honda rancher es i changed the oil and found the old owner had put the oil filter in backwards i put a new one in plus oil i started it and it started smoking can any one help me out

So we can assume that it wasn't smoking before you changed the oil?

What color is the smoke?
Blue indicates oil consumption. Blue smoke on start-up and then clearing up is a sign of leaking valve stem seals. Constant blue smoke after warming up is a good sign of worn rings and/or cylinder wall.

Black smoke is an overly rich condition.

White is moisture....possibly condensation in the exhaust burning off.

Does it continue to smoke after running until it warms up?

That tells me the rings and/or cylinder walls are worn.

If you can, run a compression check to see what the compression is.

If you put the filter in backwards on these, it pretty much blocks all oil flow.

Unfortunately, I think you are going to need to rebuild the engine.
