Default Proper chain tension?

What is proper chain tension for a 95 xplorer...when do you adjust it?...When the back tires are on/off ground?

I adjust at static height. (sitting on the ground, no extra weight) I adjust to about one inch of slack.

Don't let the hp numbers fool you. Its all in how you get it to the ground. Clutching clutching clutching!

On the older models with non concentric drive system you must preload the rear shock.I use a tie strap from rack to hitch.Tighten it down where the shock is about half compressed.Adjust chain where the slack is out but not tight. It will look loose when you let the strap off but it will be right when you sit on the seat.

Its going to depend on your model.

If your rear axle is in a concentric is adjusts as others before me have accurately outlined. If your axle is NOT in a concentric, adjust as ftwflh describes.

both people are telling you the same thing really. A manual will tell you to fully compress the suspension and adjust for a 1/4" of free play. But that is a pain, adjust it once that way. then when done check how much slack it has under it's own weight. And just keep it there. on mine it seems to be three fingers between the swingarm and the chain under it's own weight.
